Joint Visit to Kenya by Inspection Panel and EIB Complaint Mechanism Team

Members of World Bank Inspection Panel (WB-IPN) and European Investment Bank Complaint Mechanism (EIB-CM) participated in a joint visit to Kenya on January 10 – 17, 2015. They were there to determine the eligibility of the complaint received from four Maasai communities resettled under the WB and EIB financed Kenya: Electricity Expansion Project (#97) due to the construction of a geothermal plant within Hell’s Gate National Park in Rift Valley. The delegation included Jan Mattson (Panel Member) and Dilek Barlas (Executive Secretary) of WB-IPN, and Alfredo Adab (Deputy Head of Division) and Omar El Sabee (Officer) from EIB-CM. The delegation met with affected Maasai community members, government officials, Kenya Electricity Generating Company (KenGen) representatives, and staff from the World Bank, EIB, and other donor agencies based in Nairobi. The Panel’s recommendation for an investigation was approved by the WB Board on February 13, 2015.
