Nick Pelosi of First Peoples Worldwide Visits the Inspection Panel

Nick Pelosi, Corporate Engagement Manager ofFirst Peoples Worldwide visited the Panel on February 10, 2015 to talk about their work promoting Indigenous rights worldwide. First Peoples is an Indigenous People’s-led organization which funds local development projects in Indigenous communities all over the world, using traditional Indigenous knowledge to solve problems related to medicine, food security, and climate change.

Nick also made a presentation of their recently releasedIndigenous Rights Risk Report which analyzes the risks of oil, gas and mining sites on or near Indigenous land operated by U.S.-based companies. The report shows that while 92% of these sites pose a medium to high risk to shareholders and investors, only 5 companies have policies to proactively engage and work with Indigenous Peoples. Nick also talked about their efforts more generally to engage the World Bank around ways to constructively apply the Free, Prior, and Informed Consent (FPIC) policy in projects which involve Indigenous communities worldwide.
