Inspection Panel Joins Other IAMs to Explain Their Mandates, Operations to Civil Society in Uzbekistan

The Inspection Panel on June 23 and 24, 2021, joined the independent accountability mechanisms (IAMs) of the International Finance Corporation, the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB) and the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) to explain their mandates and operations to civil society organizations in Uzbekistan.
 
Panel Member Mark Goldsmith explained the work of the Inspection Panel, Senior Operations Officer Serge Selwan presented a Panel case study and Senior Environmental Officer Nicolas Kotschoubey took part in a discussion on how to file a complaint to the IAMs and the issue of reprisals against complainants. Mr. Goldsmith, Mr. Selwan and Mr. Kotschoubey also responded to participants’ questions on a number of topics, including how complaints are assessed to determine if they can be accepted, the possible outcomes following a complaint and whether non-governmental organizations need to register with the IAMs to submit a complaint.

The virtual workshop was organized with the Compliance Advisor Ombudsman, AIIB’s Project-affected People’s Mechanism, EBRD’s Independent Project Accountability Mechanism and the International Accountability Project. Earlier in June, the Panel participated in similar workshops in Vietnam and Cambodia.
