The Inspection Panel on March 16, 2021, explained its mandate and operations to civil society and community representatives in Fiji. The virtual seminar was organized with the University of the South Pacific’s School of Economics and at the invitation of the non-governmental organization FRIEND, the Foundation for Rural Integrated Enterprises & Development.

Panel Chair Imrana Jalal, Panel Member Ramanie Kunanayagam, Senior External Affairs Officer Rob Doherty and Research Assistant Rupes Dalai discussed, among other things, the Panel’s role at the World Bank, how to access project information on the World Bank website, who can submit a complaint to the Panel and how to do so, and the process the Panel follows once a complaint is filed. They also responded to questions from participants on a range of topics, including on when during the project cycle community consultations are conducted and complaints may be submitted, and how the Bank defines indigenous peoples.

The discussion is the latest in a series of virtual outreach events the Panel has conducted since members and staff began working from home during COVID-19 pandemic. Please contact the Inspection Panel at ipanel@worldbank.org if you are interested in taking part in a virtual workshop.

The Panel will resume in-person workshops as the pandemic eases and the World Bank permits mission travel.
