Request for Inspection: NTPC Power Generation Project in India ( Credit No. 3632)

WASHINGTON, May 7, 1997--The independent Inspection Panel for the World Bank On May 2, 1997, registered a request for an investigation into the World Bank NTPC Power Generation project in India. The request was filed by residents of Singrauli, India, represented by Ms. Madhu Kohli, who live in the project area and who claim that they have been directly, materially and adversely affected by acts and omissions of the International Bank for Reconstruction and Development (the "Bank"). The Request claims that the people living in the project area have been, and may potentially be, directly and adversely affected as a result of the execution of the NTPC Power Generation Project-located in the Singrauli region of

India about 1000 Km away from Delhi-and the Bank's omissions and failures in the preparation and implementation of the project.

Under Inspection Panel procedures Bank Management will respond to the claims made in the request no later than June 3, 1997. After the Inspection Panel receives this response, it will make a recommendation to the Bank's Executive Directors on whether or not the request should be investigated. The Executive Directors will then decide whether or not to accept or reject the Panel's recommendation.
