New Member of the Inspection Panel

The Inspection Panel is pleased to announce the appointment of Ms. Eimi Watanabe as a Member of the Inspection Panel. Ms. Watanabe will replace Mr. Werner Kiene, whose term will expire on October 31, 2009.

Ms. Watanabe, a Japanese national, brings to the Panel more than thirty years of experience in the field of development. A sociologist by training, she has been involved in a wide range of substantive areas including child health and nutrition, primary education, environment, governance, and migration. From 1998 to 2001 she served as Assistant Secretary General and Director of the UNDP’s Bureau for Development Policy. Prior to that she was UN Resident Coordinator and UNDP Resident Representative in Bangladesh, and UNICEF Representative in India.

Throughout her career, Ms. Watanabe has demonstrated a commitment to project evaluation, including participatory appraisal methodology, and a strong track record of working collaboratively with governments, NGOs, and donor agencies. She has recently served as a member of the Strategic and Audit Advisory Committee of the United Nations Office for Project Services (UNOPS). She earned a Ph.D. from the London School of Economics and received her B.A. in Sociology from the International Christian University in Tokyo.

Ms. Watanabe was selected to this position through an international, competitive recruitment process. Her appointment is effective November 1, 2009.
